19 May 2020

Sri Prakash Lohia was born on August 11, 1952 in Kolkata, India. He has a bachelor’s degree in Commerce from the University of Delhi in 1971.

In 1973, the family moved to Indonesia. In 1975, his father, Mohan Lal Lahia, then owner of a small clothing industry, led Sri Prakash to start a yarn-making company named Indo-Rama Synthetics. Indorama is the fusion of the words Indo and Rama: Indo stands for Indonesia and Rama is a mythical king of ancient India. Father and son share the same dream: to set up a family business and to see it among one of the biggest in its domain.

In about fifteen years, Sri Prakash has led Indo-Rama Synthetics to the top.

In 1990, the company went public in Indonesia. It was then a pioneer in the making of polyester staple fibers and filaments in Indonesia in 1991 and in the production of PET resins in 1995.
At the end of the 1990s, Mohan Lal Lohia decided to split the business between his three sons to avoid future family conflicts. Lohia’s older brother, Om Prakash, moves to India where he develops one part of the business. Aloke, Lohia’s younger brother, moves to Thailand and creates several petrochemical subsidiaries. He now runs the PET polymer manufacturer Indorama Ventures Public Co. listed in Thailand and is also a billionaire. Sri Prakash remains the head of Indorama Synthetics and is in charge of the parent company Indorama Corporation and leads the major strategies.

The group’s ascent continues. Indorama becomes the largest producer of polyolefins in West Africa, the largest producer of fertilizers in sub-Saharan Africa and one of the largest producers of disposable synthetic gloves in the world.

Today, Indorama manufactures a multitude of products, especially polyethylene, polypropylene, nitrogen fertilizers, phosphate fertilizers, polyester, polyester raw materials, textiles and medical gloves. The products of the company are sold both nationally and internationally in Europe, the United States, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
With its subsidiary Indorama Ventures in Thailand, Indorama operates over 70 manufacturing sites in more than 30 countries. Indorama Ventures is the world’s largest producer of polyester products with factories on the five continents and also one of the largest producers of polyester raw materials. In addition to polyester, Indorama Ventures also manufactures intermediates like IPA and performance materials made from fibers such as polypropylene, nylon, viscose and aramids.
In recognition of his achievements, the businessman received the Pravasi Bhartiya Samman Award (Overseas Indian Award) from the Indian president in 2012.
“Dad is more of a risk taker. He operates from the gut, and his gut is usually right”, Amit Lohia.
The businessman is very proud of his former country of residence, Indonesia, which opened the doors to success for him. In 2013, he opened the «Politeknik Enjinering Indorama School» in which he invested a lot of money. This school promotes quality education for all budgets.

Billionaire with a big heart, he dedicates himself to improving Indonesians living conditions of life.

His businesses, his Lohia Foundation and the Indorama Charitable Trust are active in several areas, including education, health, social development and environmental. Very active in the health field, he especially provides significant financial support for the construction of local medical centers or hospitals. In addition, Indorama provides poor families with facilities to get monthly medical examinations.
Sri Prakash owns the second largest collection of color lithographs in the world. His love for art is not limited to lithographs. Indeed, he is one of the largest collectors of rare books in the world. His collection includes a 16th century edition of «The Holy Bible» and an 18th century version of «The Holy Koran».
With almost 40 years of experience in the manufacturing industry, the brilliant entrepreneur sits on the boards of directors of various group subsidiaries such as Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited, listed on the Thailand Stock Exchange since 2005. The businessman is married to Seema Mittal (sister of the Indian steel giant Lakshmi Mittal). The couple are parents of two children and live in London. Sri Prakash is still President of Indorama Corporation and his son Amit is the Vice-President.

« Indonesia is where it all began for us. The people of this country and company are the ones who make the real difference ».
